General Acne Information

Common acne, also known as acne vulgaris, is a chronic inflammatory disease which can affect the pilosebaceous units of the face, neck, chest, and back (1). The pilosebaceous units are composed of a hair follicle and associated oil glands (sebaceous glands) of the skin. This structure is very receptive and altered by external insults from the environment, such as heat, sunlight, water, and detergents, in addition to internal changes in human physiology, such as with hormones during puberty.

Acne affects more than 85 percent of people between the ages of 15 to 19, and commonly continues into adulthood (2). Males and smokers are known to suffer severe acne in comparison to females and non-smokers. Although acne does not affect health overall, the psychosocial impact of acne can be devastating. Patients with acne are well-known to be more prone to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, social withdrawal and anger. Moreover, patients with acne are more likely to be unemployed than people without acne (3). Therefore, the goal of acne treatment & medicines site, is to provide information and support on evidence-based and trial tested therapies that can provide early and effective treatment to dramatically improve a person’s skin changes, and also quality of life.
